These are the lyrics to the songs on the DVD

BOB LIND Perspective

Words & Music:

Bob Lind

NOTE TO THIS PAGE

My songs are constantly being reworked. If you notice a discrepancy between the words I sing in the film and the ones found on this page, THIS is the source to trust.

Songs like “Perspective,” “How to Get Depressed” and “China” were relatively new then. I’ve since developed them.

Also, the words I sing often depend on the mood I’m in at the time.

These words are the closest it gets to being set in stone.

ROLL THE WINDOWS DOWN

Words and music by Bob Lind

Roll the windows down. I see no sign of rain.
The sun is just like gold dust on my skin.
Every ray of hope I lost is mine again.
I can feel it beginning. Can’t you feel it beginning?
It’s the sweet taste of winning
And I’m drinking it in.

Roll the windows down. We’re driving straight away
From every bump and bend we ever knew.
The road lies out ahead like one long Saturday
And we’re not gonna miss it.
There’s no way that we’ll miss it.
It’s so real I could kiss it.
And it’s kissing me too.

Jenny put on some jazz.
Let’s get in motion.
There’s a breeze off the ocean
And a seaside cafe
On this beautiful day.
Roll the windows down. The sky is clear and blue.
Close your eyes and let your red hair blow.
All the dreams you thought you’d lost are here for you.
And we’re not gonna miss it.
There’s no way that we’ll miss it.
It’s so real I could kiss it.
Roll ‘em down and let’s go.

CHERYL’S GOIN’ HOME

Words and music by Bob Lind

The thunder cracks against the night
The dark explodes with yellow light
The railroad sign is flashing bright
The people stare but I don’t care
My flesh is cold against my bones
And Cheryl’s goin’ home

Come hear me shouting through the rain
Is there a way to stop the train
I’ve got some reasons to explain
About the way I was today
The whistle moans and I’m alone
And Cheryl’s goin’ home

Santa Rosa Special down the line
I’m running desperately behind
There’s only one thing on my mind
The rain and tears are in my eyes
The things I have to say will not be known
And Cheryl’s goin’ home

SPILLING OVER

Words and music by Bob Lind

She’s not too proud
She’ll wear her hand-me-downs proudly
And she’s not too wise
She’ll listen to your trite advice
Because she loves you

Look at all the people close and run away from pain
Look at how her love is spilling over in the rain
Spilling over

She’s not too cool
She’ll maybe embarrass you
Because she loves you
And she’s not too hard
You can con her for anything
And she’ll believe you

Play the theme for Fire Children touching as they run
Look at how her love is spilling over in the sun
Spilling over

She’ll be on your mind
Long after you've let her go
Sometimes you'll remember
Little things that made her special

Dream along the edges of a love that missed its time
Look at how her love is spilling over in your mind
Spilling over

HOW TO GET DEPRESSED

Words and music by Bob Lind

Beginning with the basics, you sit right down
And give a lot of thought to yourself.
If any higher value should cross your mind,
Consider the state of your health.
Think of what that strange little cough could mean
And what you should have said to that jerk.
Start with the assumption that something’s wrong
And anything you think of will work.

Make a list of who’s slighted you
And all the things it’s too late to do.
Think of all your mistakes
And how little difference you make.
You’re halfway there.

Don’t be like the amateurs who waste their time
Counting up the bad breaks they’ve known.
Use your time efficiently and call to mind
All of the good breaks you’ve blown.
Think of all those chances at happiness,
Chances that only knock once.
Watch the clock and remind yourself
How the days keep turning to months.

Watch the news every chance you get.
Judge people that you’ve never met.
Spend your mornings inside.
Keep defending your pride.
You’re almost there.

Think about those sneaky middle-eastern creeps.
Think about your back-stabbing friends.
Sit around remembering the good old days.
Life was so much simpler then.

If, right now, someone’s heart is reaching out to you,
Shut it hard away from your mind.
You know you’re probably too cool for her.
He’s just gonna suck up your time.
Think of Hemingway, Monroe and Van Gogh,
Remind yourself of how the great ones go.
Geniuses don’t ask for help.
You’re kind of brilliant yourself.
There you are.

I LIKE YOUR COMPANY TONIGHT

Words and music by Bob Lind

Baby’s wearing her dancing shoes
I’m rolled up in bed.
You’re shaking to Elvis
I’ve got Gershwin in my head.
Like the poles of a magnet I point left
And you point right.
But I like your company tonight.

You like seeing this great big world
I like staying home.
You spend a fortune on styling gels
I won’t even buy a comb.
Like the moon in the morning, I grow dim
When you get bright.
But I like your company tonight.

I stand up you sit down
You turn up the heat as I mop off my brow.
I put off until tomorrow what you simply
Have to do right now.

You like to talk about politics and where we’ll be next year.
I don’t trust those shifty weasels and I’m all right right here.
Like a tooth in an apple, I get loose when you’re too tight.
And I like your company tonight.

LOVE CAME RIDING

Words and music by Bob Lind

Love came riding over miles of broken road
I must have been hung up somewhere
Ain’t that just the way it goes

Love came in the early morning
But I was sleeping late that day
And I love to live the night life
But what a heavy price to pay

Everybody understands
You’re supposed to catch it while you can
But everybody takes a try
It breaks their hearts they let it die
And never try again

Love speaks so softly
Illusion has a louder voice
And me, I’ve always been lazy
And so I made the easy choice

(repeat first verse)

LOOKING FOR YOU

Words and music by Bob Lind

It was after the funeral riding back to my buddy’s wake
I got high with the limo driver and showed up an hour late
They had some tequila there
And some lukewarm Guinness stout
I hit on the widow and got kicked out

(chorus:)
I was looking for you
I was looking for you
I was looking for you.

I fell into a cowboy bar the people were hard and mean
One guy was feeding the ugliest dog I’ve ever seen.
I couldn’t shut up about it nature took its course.
He kicked my ass on the sawdust floor

(chorus)

I was looking for you before I knew you
But I knew you must be somewhere
Or else how could I go on

I wound up with a girl I knew she always had killer drugs
I sang her the blues all night and bled on her Persian rug.
The sun came up and I staggered out and across her lawn.
I stood looking up at the dirty dawn.

(chorus)

I was looking for you before I knew you
But I knew you must be somewhere
Or else how could I go on

TWO WOMEN

Words and music by Bob Lind

Diana says, "Man, that shirt
Brings out the blue in your eyes."
She tells you the things you say
Are such a welcome surprise.
Sarah says, "Jesus Christ,
Do we have to hear that story again?
Can't you pick up around you?
I'm not your maid. Is it too much to ask?
Put a coaster under that glass."

Diana looks in your eyes
And sees there's somebody there.
Sarah can only see the clothes
You left on the chair.
Diana brushing by, her fingers
Tingling your neck, triggers a memory.
You start reaching back for the day
Sarah used to touch you that way.

You twist your wedding ring
And wonder whether everything
You used to think was right could now be wrong.
But buddy don't kid yourself.
If you move on to something else,
Diana will be Sarah before long.

Sarah picks up the kids
And brings in the groceries and bills.
She knows you and loves you anyway
Like no one else ever will.
Diana will always call from the shadows,
Promising more.
Either way, it's not easy.
Every step, either road that you take,
You're gonna carry the choices you make.

CHINA

Words and music by Bob Lind

This is not the world I keep remembering.
It’s grown unkind and cold and I have too.
I sail against a savage wind that casts me out, away
From the wide-eyed little boy that I once knew.
I could drift away to China
Swept across the sea.
Sometimes I’m just that far from me.

This is not the home I spread my wings to find.
The shrinking sky has poisoned all my birds.
Strangers killing children with their guns and bombs
And planes.
Lovers killing love with careless words.
I could drift away to China, half a world away.
That’s just how lost I feel today.

This is not the course that I was charted for.
Nothing looks familiar anymore.
The stars that used to steer me
Look like burning buildings now.
And it’s harder every day to see the shore.
I could drift away to China, miles away from home.
Out in the darkness on my own

WEARING YOU

Words and music by Bob Lind

Driving home I feel you on my skin tonight
Pressing on my heart around these curves
Closer than the insides of my fingernails
Like a satin sheet over my nerves

I’m wearing you I’m wearing you
You’re a secret I can’t cover anymore
You’re the most revealing lie I ever wore

I’m wondering if you’re looking at that moon tonight
Tasting the remnants of my kiss
A taste that keeps the bitter truth away
We neither one can carry this

I’m wearing you I’m wearing you
You’re a secret I can’t cover anymore
You’re the most revealing truth I ever wore

My life was orderly
I valued honesty but oh
I must have felt the cold
This cloak around my soul feels so
Dangerously tight
Into the night I go

I guess I never new my nakedness
Until you covered it with yours
And I don’t know where this is taking us
But I can’t deny it anymore

I’m wearing you. I’m wearing you
And I can see tomorrow clouding up with rain
But tonight I feel you running in my veins
And I’ll be wearing you against the coming pain

PERSPECTIVE

Words and music by Bob Lind

What if you leave me
The faithful moon will keep on rising
Stars will shimmer birds will fly
The nights will fall and years will slide
Across me

When you leave me
I’ll still wake up I’ll still grow old
And close the door against the cold
The same red plastic cups will hold
My coffee

The world will still go on
The world won’t know you’re gone
What if you leave me
The setting sun will still be casting
Emerald highlights on the grass
The ordinary days will pass
Without you

When you leave me
Across the sea the Chinese rain
Will drop on thirsty fields and plains
And no one there will dream in vain
About you

The world will still go on.
The world won’t know you’re gone

What if you leave me
These bolts will hold this chair in place
This soft and silky pillow case
Will yield the imprint of your face
Eventually

When you leave me
The spring will turn the gardens green
I’ll find the time to mend the screens
And no one else will see these dreams
You lent me

The world will not recall
The world won’t care at all

ELUSIVE BUTTERFLY

Words and music by Bob Lind

You might wake up some morning
To the sound of something moving past your window
In the wind
And if you’re quick enough to rise
You’ll catch the fleeting glimpse
Of someone’s fading shadow

Out on the new horizon
You may see the floating motion
Of a distant pair of wings

And if the sleep has left your ears
You might hear footsteps
Running through an open meadow

Don’t be concerned
It will not harm you
It’s only me pursuing
Something I’m not sure of
Across my dreams
With nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

You might have heard my footsteps
Echo softly in the distance through
The canyons of your mind
I might have even called your name
As I ran searching after
Something to believe in

You might have seen me running
Through the long abandoned ruins
Of the dreams you left behind
If you remember something there
That glided past you
Followed close by heavy breathing

Don’t be concerned
It will not harm you
It’s only me pursuing
Something I’m not sure of
Across my dreams
With nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

SOMEONE TO ADORE

Words and music by Bob Lind

I’m not a complicated man
I’m not that hard to understand
I need what everybody needs
Down in my simple soul I bleed
For what the world is yearning for
Someone to adore.

Someone to adore
The song that swells in every beating human heart
The theme that throbs in every classic work of art.
The drive that draws a man to churches -- and to whores
Someone to adore

Somewhere a man is on his knees
His wife is dying by degrees
He calls to God and tries to trust
As another woman stirs his lust
He hates his weakness to the core
For someone to adore

Someone to adore.
He can’t believe his prayers for healing co-exist
With dark desires to feel a stranger’s vibrant kiss
The roots are twisted but the limbs are stretching toward
Someone to adore

Primal and constant the infinite streams find the shore
The source of perfect peace the cause of every savage war
Someone to adore

Last night I woke in the waning moon
I felt my mother in the room
She said the world must hear your voice
Don’t be afraid you have a choice
In how you open up the door
To someone to adore

Someone to adore
And so I sing tonight, my voice is reaching out
Out through the walls and past the jagged rocks of doubt
Beyond my limits I can feel my spirit soar
With someone to adore
