Don't Pretend You Remember

Words and music by Bob Lind

She said: “I see that you’re saying goodbye
Your eyes say you’ve already gone.
Goodbye to the fire in those Mexican skies
When sunsets burned down into dawns.
Words that we left on that endless white beach
Like maids placing chocolates on beds . . .”
He leaned in and nodded to soften the blow,
And she stood up in anger and said:
“Don’t pretend you remember Cozumel and its afterglow.
Don’t pretend you remember.
If you did, you could never let go.
If you did, you could never let go.”
She said: “I see you dismissing those nights
As cheap, sentimental romance
Like you push away people who try to be friends
And would if you gave them the chance.
I was the one who got under your wall.
You liked it. You drank me like wine.”
He said: “I know it.” She said: “No, you don’t.
You’ve frozen it out of your mind.
Don’t pretend you remember.
Planting seeds that were meant to grow.
Don’t pretend you remember.
If you did, you could never let go.
If you did, you could never let go.”
He said: “It’s not easy to leave you. Please don’t hold a grudge against me.”
She said: “What I’m holding are pictures
I can never again make you see.
Don’t pretend you remember.
Mem’ry died in you long ago.
Don’t pretend you remember.
In your eyes I see cold sheets of snow
Cov’ring dreams on a beach back in Mexico.”

From The Road

Words and music by Bob Lind

Shine on my little galaxy while I’m gone
Through days and distances and nights alone
The fires of home
Will light my highway back to you
You know it’s not just memories that bind us
These threads of sunlight stitching through our days
Your words your ways your smile
Make every moment new
You think the real adventures thrive
Out here
The precious crowds the gold career
But I know where the quiet treasures are
Beside you on the sofa or the movies
Or the car
In moments others call mundane
My soul is warming by your flame
Turning just like a sailor to the harbor
And I will carry back my songs and tales
Of calms and gales
And sing and tell them all
To you

Home

Words and music by Bob Lind

Who knows how bad your soul was burned by what you saw
The nights that scraped against your innocence
And rubbed it raw
The days that stretched you to the limits of your faith
The dark decisions that your battered spirit had to make
But you’re safe now back with the ones who love you
You are sheltered in our midst
You are cradled here and kissed
You’ve been salvaged and returned
We are lotion on your burns
And you are home
Home
Home

Who knows why these distortions happen as they do
The vicious twists of life
And why these claws have torn at you
I only know that there are candles in this night
They’ve led your footsteps here
With only peace and rest in sight
And you’re free now back with your friends and family
You’ve been rescued and renewed
You are tended to and soothed
You are held in our hearts and arms
In a world away from harm
And you are home
Home
Home
Home

Perspective

Words and music by Bob Lind

What if you leave me
The faithful moon will keep on rising
Stars will shimmer birds will fly
The nights will fall and years will slide
Across me
When you leave me
I’ll still wake up I’ll still grow old
And close the door against the cold
The same red plastic cups will hold
My coffee
The world will still go on the world won’t know you’re gone
What if you leave me
The setting sun will still be casting
Emerald highlights on the grass
The ordinary days will pass
Without you
When you leave me
Across the sea the Chinese rain
Will drop on thirsty fields and plains
And no one there will dream in vain
About you.
The world will still go on the world won’t know you’re gone
What if you leave me
These bolts will hold this chair in place
This soft and silky pillow case
Will yield the imprint of your face
Eventually
When you leave me
The spring will turn the gardens green
I’ll find the time to mend the screens
And no one else will see these dreams
You lent me
The world will not recall the world won’t care at all

The Gravity of the World

Words and music by Bob Lind

I was reading about the astronauts
They were weightless out in space
Like floating flecks of dust they soared and swirled
But when they got back home
They had to teach their
Legs to walk again
Crippled by the gravity of the world
And for no reason I know of I thought about lies
The lies that protect our money
The lies that guard our pride
The lies that keep our trigger fingers curled
The necessary lies that keep our loved ones safe from pain
Keep us tethered to the gravity of the world
I can still remember the lightness that I knew
How joyously this heart of mine
Protected what I knew was true
They say every baby born is like a brand-new empty glass
And that coffins close those glasses when they fill
And the only thing that matters
Is the substance we’ve contained
And the precious drops of truth we don’t let spill
And I can’t call back the moment
When the world came breaking through
The carelessness and compromise
The things I thought I had to do
The lies that protect our money
The lies that guard our pride
The lies that keep our trigger fingers curled
The necessary lies that keep our loved ones safe from pain
Keep us tethered to the gravity of the world

Too Late (to let you go)

Words and music by Bob Lind

They got women in Tokyo raised from when they’re girls
To conjure sweet and rare delights
To make a man forget this world
Women here in America say that’s too much to give.
Why should I kill off myself to help some macho ego live
And then there’s you
Who seems to never count the cost of love
Who knows that nothing’s ever lost to love
But nonetheless I know sometimes you need the words
Those fragile moments when you long to be assured
Of what your heart already knows
It’s too late to let you go
Maybe back in the early days before things went this far
Before I came to fully know the miracle you are
I could’ve turned my back on this and gone different way
But I don’t want to think too much about where I’d be today
Because of you
I stand up straight enough to reach my dreams
Sometimes I’m scared
By what your faith in me has come to mean
I watch your burning bridges glow and know
It’s too late to let you go
Some people say we fell from someplace
And we’re trying to get back in
Some people say we’re going someplace –
Someplace we’ve never been
Some people say there is no place
It’s just a cruel distracting lie
But I can see our destination shining in your eyes
If not for you I know my life might be less dangerous
But now there's just no going back for us
The rain may come the wind may blow
But it’s too late to let you go
