Songs that blew you away

Post by bob_32_116 »

I heard a new song today that just totally blew me away.

It got me thinking, I can only recall being affected that way by a song just a few times in my life, and the first time was hearing Elusive Butterfly. To be honest, the first timeI heard EB, I think it went in one ear and out the other, I thought, "That's quite a nice little song"... but the second time I took more notice and WOW! It wasn't only the words, or only the tune, it was perfect combination ot the two. I still think it's possibly the best song I have ever heard, though there have been some serious contenders, some by Bob Lind, some by other people.

I'd be interested in what songs have affected other people this way- not just songs you really like, but songs that seem to kind of transport you somewhere else in that magical fashion. That is, your short list.

Here is my current short list:

Elusive Butterfly - Bob Lind
It's Just My Love - Bob Lind
In the Morning - Ronnie Burns (written by the Bee Gees)
Macarthur Park- Richard Harris (Jim Webb)
The Lovers (Rod McKuen)
Eleanor Rigby (Lennon-McCartney)
Feel Flows - The Beach Boys
Us and Them - Pink Floyd
Follow You Follow Me - Genesis
Deeper Water - Paul Kelly

and the latest one:

No Longer There - Cat Empire

You can hear this song on Cat Empire's MySpace site - chack it out if you haven't heard it, it's brilliant. Here's the link:

Songs That Blew You Away

Post by Danny Harris »

Hmm...depends on the mood, of course...but, here goes...

Goin' Back - Dusty Springfield (Goffin/King)
I Just Let It Take Me - our Bob
Tunesmith - Johnny Rivers (Jimmy Webb)
Tea Cosy - Clifford T Ward
Universal Soldier - Donovan (Buffy St Marie)
Love Is Just A Four Letter Word - Joan Baez (the other Bob)
April Fools - Dionne Warwick (Bacharach/David)
Ten Storeys High - David and Jonathan
Step Out Of Line - Twice As Much (...yeah, not too deep, I know...)
Both Sides Now - Joni Mitchell

They all are on my favourites playlist, and still move me...

I've been listening a lot to a song called "The Chinatown Bus" by Bishop Allen.

There are other song files on their site and their MySpace Page, but to hear "Chinatown Bus," you'll have to seek it out elsewhere. Very Simon & Garfunkley.

There are lyrics here and a (rather poorly recorded) live recording here.

Very Simon & Garfunkley.
Err... Shouldn't that be "Garfunkelesque"? as in "Dylanesque", "Pythonesque" etc.? :)

... living in England in 1964 you kinda got swamped with Beatlemania, it was everywhere, in the papers, on TV, in the shops.... there was no escape but I ignored it as best I could... heck I'd rather have listened to The Shadows' Apache than anything by the Moptops... then my older brother brought home a single he'd borrowed off a pal... I Get Around by a group called The Beach Boys.... catchy enough song and I quite liked it.... I flipped it over to hear the B side... Don't Worry Baby.... and ZAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was akin to an instant religous conversion... I couldn't stop playing it.. my parents threatened to wallop me if I didn't stop playing it constantly... but I couldn't stop, it was like a drug.. the song just took me over... and 43 years down the line I still get goosebumps when I play it... and if you want to know how it really affected me you should check out blueboarders . com - and I have to say there are only a few songs that have done that to me over the years.. but Elusive Butterfly is in that precious list along with Nilsson's Everybody's Talkin' and Gordon Lighfoot's If You Could Read My Mind... music, don't you just love it???

I quite like "Apache" too -- just doing the whispery percussion thing.

Whushtwhushtwhushtwhusht!

Oh, just say the words side by side. "Garfunkley" is so much more fun!

I actually like The Beatles'music more now than I did at the time. Not all of it though.

and Everybody's Talkin' is a song that I should have included in my list.

Another I forgot to mention is Ticking by Elton John. I never hear it played on radio, but I think it's far and away the best song he ever wrote.

Kie--I like that Beach Boys tune, "Don't Worry Baby" very much as well. I remember hearing it in the car 10 years ago or so during a trip with my family, and although I had heard it many times before, on this occasion it cast me in a spell. Funny how that can happen sometimes with a song you are already familiar with. About 2 years ago I listened to the "Bridge Over Troubled Water" album again after a long hiatus, and was very taken by, "The Only Living Boy in New York". I had always liked it, but it really grabbed my heart this time. Some lovely things there.

As far as a song affecting you like a drug, ever hear a tune having something to do with a certain winged insect floating by someone's window?

Maybe the theme to Night of the Hunter?

There was a fly...
It was a pretty fly....

From the immortal Ogden Nash:

God in His wisdom made the fly,
And then forgot to tell us why.
