I wish Bob would record these songs Acoustically and let us get at his Special Request Lost Songs CD that we are clamoring for. Please Bob. The words are beautiful but married to the music it takes your heart away. Thanks Jeff!!!!! Ed Hackie

I know I would fork over $20 without blinking an eye for even just a CDR of newly recorded acoustic demos of all these great older songs. It could be sold right here thru the website.....

Elusive Butterfly (with a couple of the "lost" verses)

You might wake up some morning, to the sound of something moving past your window in the wind
And if you're quick enough to rise you'll catch a fleeting glimpse of someone's fading shadow.
Out on the new horizon, you may see the floating motion of a distant pair of wings
And if the sleep has left your ears you might hear footsteps running through an open meadow.

Don't be concerned, it will not harm you
It's only me pursuing something I'm not sure of,
Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright, elusive butterfly of love.

My name is not worth knowing, it's enough to know I'm just a willing slave to something free
You might have seen me once or twice between the walls of grown up tears and children's laughter.
You might have seen me running, through the long abandoned ruins of someone you used to be
And if you felt a brief caress of wings that fluttered past with something runnning after.

Chorus

You might have heard my footsteps echo softly in the distance through the canyons of your mind
I might have even called your name as I ran searching after something to believe in.
Though it's too late for changing, some day you might look back exploring times you left behind
If you remember something there that glided past you followed close by heavy breathin'.

Chorus

The morning sun is nodding, to the prisoner underneath whose restless questions are his bars
And all the clouds between the two look down bewildered as to what he blindly follows.
You might have stood in silence, and heard symphonies of wandering and wondered whose they are
They're compositions of a mad man trying hard to fill the part of him that's hollow.

Chorus

Help, Bob!! Please lend your assistance with the fifth verse!! The only fragment of the fifth verse that comes to mind is "a thousand laughing princes". Thanks for everything you've given us over the years!

This is the 5th verse that was posted here before "the crash" . I'm glad that I printed it out then & saved it

The open eyes of evening watch the penny-ante festival of fools below the moon
The clumsy joker tries in vain to catch the prize before a thousand laughing princes.
The night gives way to morning, and returns to bring the darkness on the heels of afternoon.
But if the night should bring the feeling of a distant game of tag upon your senses,
(chorus)

Those extra verses are wonderful! Pure class!

John, I think penny ante here means 'small time losers', but the beauty of good lyrics/poetry is that it is open to your own interpretation.

You're gonna give Ed a heart attack... :D

You're not kidding! It would be a treasure. I'd especially love to hear the acoustic demos of the 'Elusive Bob Lind' tracks (10-15 on your list), before all the added instrumentation.

The 'Bring It All Down' demo is on the new re-issue CD, by the way.

Archives? Archives? Where are these archives? I would love to go where these archives are and give a listen. By the way am I the only one who believes Bob is best when acoustically done. I loved the songs on his albums but to much orchestra takes away from the genius. Dont guild the Lily. Ed Hackie

I Agree With Bob: Not Necessarily

Post by Lou C. »

For those wanting to dredge up ALL of Bob's past, we offer this from the Be-Careful-What-You-Ask-For Department.

To My Elders With Respect

Before you shoot your words at me.
And tell me what I ought to be,
And not to throw my life away,
Look deep at what you are today,
And part the curtains of respect
And see the nakedness of neglect.

But don't kick down the youth
that will succeed you.

Go cry behind your office door
Because we are afraid of war.
And pat your bellies with the hands
that pushed us into Viet Nam.
Go babble, bitch and criticize
Because we don't believe your lies.

But don't come preach to me
Because I've had it.

I'm sick of you who try to shame me
Because I will not play yur game.
My values aren't yours, my friend, and
I'll be damned if I'll pretend that
I can keep my self-respect behind a desk

Don't make me breathe the air
that you've polluted.

[three more verses are on the original handwritten lyrics]

"Separate Highways," written about the same time, fares better ("The lights across the alley have all been put out / I sit and look into the darkness and doubt / I'm sittin' here thinking and dreaming about / the roads that we once walked together."

There was also, "The Wine is Gone," which I used to play quite a bit, actually ("One of these mornings, and you know it, you'll wake up in the early dawn / You'll check the corner for my suitcase, and you will know that I am gone / There'll be an empty space beside you, the only sound will be a song / that haunts and starts to make you realize / that you have known it all along / But the bottle is empty, the wine is all done / a million tomorrows, will come with the sun / and I must leave because ... the wine is gone.")

Later (I think in the LA days, actually) came "Roller Coaster." I remember the first line of the song was something like, "Roller coaster, roller coaster, take me for a ride ...." Sadly, I seem to have lost the first page of the transcription, so I can only bestow on the board the last few phrases of each verse. I think you get the picture.

"... close my eyes and let you whirl me out of sight.
Though I used to be a afraid I'm older now and it's alright.
Because now I know the good of your intentions.

" ... before I can ever face the bitter fact.
So promise me the treasure of your tracks can circle back.
And I'll kick away the chains of apprehension.

"...city limit soul of anyplace.
Keep me moving madly with the wind against my face.
Let the rapid movement blur the shapes about you.

"...dizziness with tension far behind.
And after I've been thrown against elastic ends of time,
I'll get off and walk my destiny without you."

Does anyone have the recording of "To My Elders With Respect"? Lyrics kinda sound similar to Masters Of War.

Another good one would be "Long Walk Home". :D

Morning is standing tall, my back's against the wall
The words have all been said, and every fire is dead
All of my hopes have gone stale in my hands
Like wild, crippled birds who have no place to land
Trapped by a change that I don't understand
I'll take the long walk home

I know you have your side, I know how hard you've tried
But I just can't get through, and look inside of you
Night has surrendered to breaking of day
Somehow we can't find the right words to say
So like the evening I'm turning away
To take the long walk home

Where has the sunshine gone, why have the shades been drawn
What made you change your mind, and leave our hopes behind
Where are the smiles of compassion we had
Where is the good laughing loud at the bad
Why has it died with us both feeling sad
I'll take the long walk home

The boat we've waited for, will never reach the shore
We've got to face the pain, and break away the chains
How can we fight what we can't even see
You can't explain your defenses to me
Time to admit what the answer must be
I'll take the long walk home

There's nothing left to say, my dreams have blown away
Deep in our souls we know, now is the time to go
I'll walk away down the road through the dawn
Stand by your window and watch til I'm gone
But don't watch the ground that my tears fall upon
I'll take the long walk home
