3 videos from Spain

Post by grant »

I've just uploaded to YouTube some Basque TV footage. I mention this here because it happens to be Basque TV featuring a live performance by Bob Lind, covering three songs:

1. "Wearing You" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFP13-OVMSc)

2. "Maybe It's the Rain" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HbABOH1M9k)

and

3. "How the Nights Can Fly" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QsnZJYNVsA)

Enjoy them!

Watching You

Post by bob_32_116 »

I just noticed something odd in those videos - well I thought it was odd...

Bob plays right-handed guitar, yet he wears his watch on his right wrist. Now I, and most other right-handed people I know, wear it on the left wrist, since this gives less interference with things the right hand is doing, such as writing. I think a watch on the right wrist would cramp my finger-picking style, while it wouldn't be so much of an obstruction to the left hand, which would be working the frets. Apparently Bob does not find this an issue.

Oh, that's not a watch - it's a regulator for the bionics in his wrist and fingers. He is a finger-picking machine... literally.

When I met Bob at the Hanbury in Brighton I was surprised to find that he is fact, left handed.

So, Lind is a "south paw"? Hmmm...that explains (to me) why I like his stuff - being a "molly-dooker" myself. (It's said that we think differently to the boring old right handed variety, you know (says he knowingly) ).

Interesting that Bob plays right handed guitar - I often wondered if Hendrix or McCartney strung their guitars left handed or right handed - I think Albert King played an upside-down right handed guitar left handed?

Whew - I've confused and exhausted myself - think I'll go and have a nice lie down somewhere...

Hendrix played a restrung, upside-down guitar - fat strings on the top. (See here.) Sir Paul, likewise.

Dick Dale (the "Misirlou" guy) never restrung his guitars. The fat strings are at the bottom. Some folks think that's why he got the sounds he did (and still does).

I imagine that makes it easier to just pick one up from anywhere and play it.

No, Grant - I disagree. I think the EASIEST (laziest?) thing to do is to listen to those who can make the thing talk, sing and cry - and marvel at the ability and results... (ha ha)
