Words or Music
Words or Music
Hello again, Bob: I have wanted to ask a "real" songwriter this simple question for the longest time. Which do you usually write first, words or music and why? Also, were Dale Anne, Julie, Cheryl real people? Thanks from a fan since EB. Gary

Re: Words or Music
I am quite sure this question is for Bob Lind, not me! However...
I don't know how Bob writes, but I am sure different songwriters have different ways of working. Some, like Elton John, always do the words first (or in his case, someone else supplies the lyrics); others start with the music and there are a few for whom the whole thing just comes together as one, not words or music written in isolation. Sometimes I think I can tell when the music was done first, because the words sound as though they have been crowded, stretched and squashed to fit the melody line;, they are not sung in the way in which you would speak the words without music.
