Re: Song for the day

^^ "Go Now" was a good song, but I don't consider the Moodies as coming into their own until Days of Future Passed, which I still think of as their defining moment and possibly the album chiefly responsible for ushering in the whole symphonic prog rock movement. In addition to the seven al...

Re: Song for the day

^^ Oh yes I know all about Alice's restaurant. All the students knew the song, although for obvious reasons it did not get much radio airplay.

This one did though - memories of my first year at Uni:

Re: Song for the day

Incidentally, Mondrian, when are you going to get yourself an avatar? It should be dead easy to find one that suits your name, or even to construct one yourself.

Re: Song for the day

The best ever protest song (IMHO) comes tomorrow. Guesses anyone? There are heaps. If you are allowing protest songs that are not specifically anti-war, Bob Marley wrote many, of which one, "Get Up, Stand Up" was used for a period by Amnesty international as their unofficial theme song. O...

Wasn't one of the members of the Police involved with Curved Air? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK, here's a song for you: this is the band that basically rekindled my interest in contemporary rock music when I discovered them in 2009...

Re: Song for the day

I have those first two Deep Forest albums! Got them in a "2 for 1" package. I actually like the second album, Boheme, better, though they are both excellent. I don't think anybody did a better job of merging "world music" - African on the first album, eastern European on the seco...

^^ When the opening notes played, I thought I was going to get the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus"!

Re: Song for the day

If we are talking about the 80's, I think by and large it was a pretty awful decade musically - but there were a few gems. It was however a bit of a golden age for Australian rock, which seemed to really come of age around that time, producing acts that were genuinely original instead of bands that ...

Re: Song for the day

I always liked this song. Annoyingly, when it was played on radio, it was always edited, removing a large part of the "bridge". This was of course in the days when three minutes was considered about the longest permissible running time for a song on the radio. (We seem to have returned to ...

Re: If Bob .....

Mondrian has been posting behind Bob's back while Bob's face was in the book. :)

Mondrian, I think the song "Elusive Butterfly" is what drew most of us to Mr Lind, but do you know or own any others in his catalogue?

I never heard of Will Holt. Any info?

Re: The Sixties

I have mentioned this radio program "Woodstock Rock" earlier in this thread, but have a listen to this episode, or at least a look at the playlist. Some real gems here, especially the first half of the programme. I was particularly intrigued by the song from The Association, quite unlike a...

Re: Stephen Hawking and Fopp

We do Valentine's Day too, but in Australia Feb 14th is chiefly remembered as the anniversary of the introduction of decimal currency, which was 50 years ago today. Never heard of Fopp - is it a chain? I imagine Hawking is "over the moon" after the recent announcement that astronomers have...

Brian Wilson & The Beach Boys

I can hardly believe that it's now 12 years since Brian Wilson released his long-lost album, SMiLE. Begun in 1967, and shelved due to Brian's mental problems and the rifts within the band, it finally saw the light of day 37 years later. Never, in my opinion, have so many waited so long... for so muc...
